The oldest European city

Santo Domingo is the DR’s capital, its cultural heart, and one of the most cinematic wedding cities anywhere in the region. The Zona Colonial — a UNESCO World Heritage site — contains the first cathedral, the first university, the first paved street, and the first hospital in the New World, all built between 1502 and 1550, and all still in daily use. Weddings here happen inside coral-stone churches, in Spanish colonial courtyards under bougainvillea, and on rooftops with the Ozama River behind them. It is our recommendation when a couple wants a wedding that feels like Europe without leaving the Caribbean.

What to know
Planning notes for Santo Domingo
Fly into SDQ — or drive from PUJ
Las Américas International (SDQ) sits east of the city, twenty-five minutes from the Zona Colonial. If most guests are already flying into Punta Cana (PUJ) for a longer stay, the drive west is about 2 hr 15 min — often paired with a wedding-day-only trip and a beach follow-up.
The cathedral is still an active cathedral
Weddings inside the Catedral Primada require paperwork through the archdiocese and typically a Catholic ceremony. Alternatives — a courtyard hotel like Casas del XVI, or a symbolic ceremony under the Plaza de España arches — are often quicker to arrange and photograph beautifully.
Rooftops and cobblestones
We build portrait time into the walk between ceremony and reception — there are three or four cobblestone corners inside two blocks that photograph like Havana or Cartagena at blue hour. It’s one of the joys of shooting a wedding in the Zona.
